Are these guys rare or something?

This is the first Sylvanian family I ever got. They were a gift from my grandpa because he knew how much I wanted a cosy cottage starter home, and decided to get me a family for the house too.

I've been thinking this for a while, but I realize I have literally never seen them on any shelves in toy stores before. And they seem to be going for outrageous prices on ebay and stuff. I've read that they're one of the first releases and rare?? But not very sure so I'm asking here. I have no plans on selling anything, I'm just really curious. Thank you! :3
